What is GRIT?

GRIT is a mobile app experience backed by leading edge technology that is designed to help Service members, National Guard members, Reservists, Veterans, Caregivers and their families gain personal insights into their emotional well-being, provide resources to improve their individual situations, connect with friends and family, and serve as a tool to build resiliency and overall well-being
GRIT, which stands for Getting Results in Transition, was developed in response to the growing concern about the rate of suicide among Veterans especially during the transition from activity duty to civilian life. Social determinants of health, including employment, housing, social connectedness, and finance all play a large role in the mental and physical health of Veterans and provide opportunities to prevent suicide. Employment and the task of finding a job once leaving the service is often cited as the number one concern of active duty service members and of Veterans during the transition period back to civilian life.
The GRIT mobile solution was designed to help our Service Members, National Guard members, Reservists, Veterans, Caregivers and their families gain personal insight into their emotional well-being, provide resources to improve their individual situations, and serve as a tool to build resiliency and overall well-being using technologies which address the social determinants of health. The first use case incorporated into the GRIT app today is Employment, with a feature that provides personalized job matching.

GRIT Features

The GRIT app is available for both iOS and Android smartphones and offers a number of cutting- edge features.
Personalized Job Matching

GRIT uses AI-backed technology to align a user’s background, skills, military experience, preferred location and job field with thousands of open jobs.

Through the integration of a job’s aggregator, GRIT is able to search through jobs posted to over 51,000 jobs sites including sites like Indeed.com, with new jobs posted on a daily basis. Users can easily upload a resume or take a picture of their resume to save their information, making it easy to apply to jobs found through the app.

Mind Gym

Everyone understands the need to stay physically active and mental health is just as important as physical health. The Mind Gym intends to help our users get and stay mentally fit.

This feature offers scientifically-backed assessments that measure areas of self-control, emotion, feeling, and cognition resulting in personalized brain training programs made up of mobile games and exercises that strengthen the user’s mental health and well-being.

Digital Self & Journal

GRIT uses technology to aggregate personalized data to create a digital representation of the individual, a “digital self”. GRIT gets to know each person individually, based on information provided safely and securely through the app, and offers insights and support to encourage an individual to be the best version of himself or herself.

For example, the GRIT app may suggest you re-take an assessment to see how your mental fitness has changed over the past month. Information on all of the activities completed within the app is available for you to review within your digital journal. Your privacy and confidentiality is our top priority. We collect the minimum amount of information needed, keep that information confidential and protected, and never share it with anyone.

Squad

Social connectedness is a critical component of emotional well-being. GRIT allows each user to assemble a squad, a network of close friends, family members and allies that can provide support, motivation, and social connectedness.

Users can add members to their squad directly from their contacts or can manually enter in the squad member’s name and phone number. A user can directly call or text a squad member from within the app, but more importantly your squad will receive a text suggesting they connect with you when your digital self-changes based on your Mind Gym assessment results, daily mood-scores, or interactions with the Digital Assistant. For example, if your Mind Gym results suggest that you may be veering towards depression, the app will text members of your squad and suggest they reach out to you. No information about your activity within the GRIT app and no personal information will be shared with your squad. They will simply be pro-actively prompted to reach out with the intent of caring contact meant to increase your social contact and sense of community.

Digital Assistant

GRIT uses artificial intelligence to provide a digital assistant that can respond directly to your questions and requests by providing support resources.

Are you looking for employment resources? Need help managing your work-life balance? The digital assistant has been trained in a number of areas, including employment and mental fitness, and can help you with everything from preparing for an interview to finding new ways to increase your work-life balance. Just ask the digital assistant…anytime.

Dynamic Navigation

GRIT was designed to continually suggest activities for you to complete within the app and to make it easy to navigate through all of GRIT’s functional areas. Event driven card navigation augments standard device navigation to provide real time access to current events and activities.

For example, the first time you log-in, GRIT’s dashboard will prompt you to complete your one time profile creation, take your first Mind Gym assessment and to set up your employment profile so the app can begin looking for jobs that match your skill set and service history.

Field Test

We are conducting a field test of the GRIT app and are looking to give Service Members, Reservists, and Veterans access to the GRIT app in a real life setting to evaluate the user experience, the usefulness of the app, and to collect feedback for improvements to the app.

The goal of the field test is to evaluate the participants use of the app by analyzing data collected using the following mechanisms:

  1. Normal Operation: Users are able to install and operate the app without individual instruction
  2. Feedback Collection: We are able to gather feedback around the user experience and suggestions for improvement
  3. Usage Analysis: Data collected helps us evaluate adoption and usage of the app and provides insight on areas of improvement

We are looking to find between 500-1000 Active Duty, Active Reservist or National Guard members, or recently transitioned Veterans that would like to participate in the field test. Family members and Caregivers are also encouraged to participate. We have identified the following characteristics for the participants:

  • Lives within one of the following geographic locations –
    • California
    • Florida
    • New York
    • Washington D.C.
    • Texas
    • Pennsylvania
    • Ohio
  • Currently in need of a job, looking for a job change, under-employed, or about to transition out of the service and looking for a job
  • Interested in any employment or specifically in one of the five Industries: IT, Engineering, Business Management, Construction, Logistics
  • Owns iOS or Android phone

Participants in the field test will be the first to have access to all features and functions of the GRIT app. Users will have the opportunity to use GRIT to improve their mental fitness, build social connectiveness, and find their next career opportunity.

In addition, users will also be able to provide valuable feedback to better the GRIT app and hopefully increase its impact and usefulness prior to its release to the service and Veteran community at large. We want field test participants to share their experience using the app, their view point on functions within the app, and ideas for ways to improve the app.

Participants in the field test are also eligible to win prizes for providing feedback.

The field test is set to begin August 28, 2019 and will last until November 8, 2019.

We are using a staggered start dates where participant will be broken into two groups each starting at staggered timeframes as follows:

  • Group 1 – August 28th, 2019
  • Group 2 – September 25th, 2019

This approach allows our team to on-board participants at a structured pace and enables our development team to respond to user feedback and rollout new features to each subsequent group of participants.

In support of a successful field test, we ask that you do the following:

  • Register to participate by selecting the “Register for the Field Test” button below and entering in your information on the registration page
  • Download the GRIT app once it becomes available on the morning of August 28, 2019 *
  • Attend a kick-off meeting** (if you are able) that walks you through downloading the app and answering any initial questions
  • Respond to short surveys within the app
  • Attend bi-weekly meetings** (if you are able) to provide feedback
  • iOS users will need a special app to download the GRIT app. The link provided in your personalized email will automatically install both apps.
  • Android users will need to provide their Google Account information so we can provide them access to the App from the Google Play Store. The link provided in your personalized email will direct you to the Google PlayStore to download the GRIT app and accept the Beta testing agreement.

*You will be provided an email with a link to automate the process but because the GRIT app is still in testing or “Beta” mode, the app download experience will be as follows:

**All kick-off meetings and bi-weekly meetings will be held via free conference call. Meetings will be held multiple times to provide a number of options for participants to attend.

iPhone users:
  1. Register to participate
  2. Invitations to receive the GRIT app consist of two emails. You need both emails to download the GRIT app.
  3. The first email will come from grit@us.ibm.com and will contain a link to the Apple App store where you can download the free Apple TestFlight app. This app is required to access the GRIT app while it is still being tested.
  4. The second invitation email will come from Apple TestFlight and will include a link that you will need to click on in order to access and download the GRIT app from within Test Flight.
Android users:
  1. Register to participate
  2. The invitation email will come from grit@us.ibm.com and will contain a link to agree to participate in the field test.
  3. Once you have agreed to participate, you can follow the link to download the GRIT app from the Google Play Store

*Please note that invitation emails are sent out twice a day at approximately 9 am CST and 4pm CST. (i.e.: If you register after 4pm CST, you will receive the invitation the following morning).

We will be holding a series of calls every other week to preview what improvements will be contained within the next release and to answer any questions that you may have.

We hope you have been able to download the GRIT app and start to explore all of its features and functionality. As we are still in the field test, we would love to hear your feedback and suggestions for improvement.

To do so, we have engineered a number of ways to provide us with your thoughts and firsthand experiences. All of these feedback channels have been designed to gather as much feedback from our users as possible to help us to continue to improve and better serve the Veteran population.

  1. In-App Surveys – In addition, the bi-weekly calls, we will push a new survey to you every other week via a card on your dashboard. The survey should take under 10 minutes to complete and all survey responses are confidential.
  2. Dashboard Feedback – A dashboard card will soon be released to all users of the app in order to allow you to submit instant feedback to us directly via the app.
